NYC Midnight Short Story Competition 2018 - Round 2

Writer's picture: N.K. WardleyN.K. Wardley

The top 3 stories from each heat in Round 1 were each given a new prompt for Round 2.

Over the Easter weekend, I was given 72 hours to write a 2000 word story:

Genre: drama

Character: an aid worker

Subject: sexual harassment

The subject had to be integral to the story; the character didn't have to be the main character.

I wrote Understanding Elephants, about a conversation a social worker on Manus Island has with one of the Iranian refugees detained there. She is trying to understand why he refugee is refusing to eat.

We find out in mid May who in our heat will go forward to Round 3.
